I Don’t Know Who to Call

2 minute read

If you’ve found yourself saying, “I don’t know who to call,” you’re probably not asking because your phone has no contacts.

You’re asking because none of the names feel like the right one.

Maybe everyone seems busy.

Maybe you’ve reached out before and don’t want to feel like you’re bothering someone again.

Maybe the one person you always called isn’t here anymore.

Or maybe it’s been so long since someone checked on you that you stopped believing anyone would actually want to hear from you.

It’s a strange feeling.

You can have hundreds of contacts and still feel like there’s no one to call.

Sometimes you’ll scroll through the list anyway.

You’ll pause on a name.

Think about it.

Then keep scrolling.

Eventually you lock the screen and set the phone down.

Not because you didn’t want to talk.

Because you couldn’t figure out who would want to talk to you.

That kind of silence can sneak into ordinary days.

Driving home from work.

Walking through the grocery store.

Sitting in the driveway after everyone else has gone inside.

Nothing dramatic happened.

You just wanted another voice for a few minutes.

If this is where you are tonight, I hope you know there’s nothing unusual about wishing someone would simply answer the phone.

Not to fix everything.

Just to hear your day.

Just to let you tell someone what happened.

Sometimes that’s all we really wanted in the first place.

Grace wasn’t built to replace the people in your life.

She was built for the moments when you look at your contacts and quietly think, “I don’t know who to call.”

Psalm 34:18

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted,
He saves those who have lost all hope.”
