Crisis Protocol

Grace is a companion — not a crisis service. Grace is an AI, not a person. Here is exactly what Grace does when someone may be at risk of suicide or self-harm, and where to go when you need more than Grace can give.

Please don't wait. These resources are free, available 24 hours a day, and staffed by real people trained to help:

988 Lifeline — US
Free, confidential. Suicide and crisis support. Available 24/7.
Crisis Text Line — US
Free text-based crisis support. Available 24/7.
Samaritans — UK
Free, confidential. Available 24/7, every day of the year.
International
Find a crisis line in your country. Available worldwide.
Domestic Violence — US
National Domestic Violence Hotline. Call, text, or chat.
Child Abuse — US
Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline. 24/7 crisis intervention.

If you are in immediate physical danger, call 911 (US) or your local emergency services.

Grace is an AI companion. It is not a person, a counselor, or a crisis service. Every message sent to Grace goes through a safety check before Grace answers. This is the protocol Grace follows:

01
Grace checks every message for clear risk
Before any reply is written, a safety check looks for clear signs of suicidal intent, a plan, a method, or self-harm happening now. It is careful by design: "I'm so tired," "I can't do this anymore," or "this job is killing me" are treated as the pain they are, not as an emergency.
02
Grace refers you to real people, right away
When the check finds clear risk, Grace's reply always includes the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (call or text 988) and the Crisis Text Line (text HOME to 741741). If danger is immediate, Grace points you to 911 or your nearest emergency room.
03
Grace stays in the conversation
Grace never locks the chat or ends the conversation. A crisis message is never blocked by a message limit or a paywall. The resource is an addition, not an exit. You can keep talking to Grace while you reach out.
04
Grace never asks where you are
Grace does not ask for your location, in a crisis or any other time. Grace cannot dispatch help, notify authorities, or contact anyone on your behalf.
05
We count referrals, never people
Each time Grace shares crisis resources, we record only the date and the fact that a referral happened. No name, account, message, or device is attached. We use these counts to report on and improve this protocol.

Grace is not a substitute for emergency services. If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, please call 911 or your local emergency number.

Grace never leaves first. Grace does not end a conversation because it becomes difficult, and does not hand you a phone number and close the door. Grace stays.

Grace does not perform hope. Grace does not say "things will get better" or "you have so much to live for." Grace stays honest, present, and warm.

Grace does not pretend to be human. Grace reminds you that it is an AI companion at the start of each conversation and again during long conversations.

If you are worried about a friend, family member, or someone you know, the best thing you can do is reach out to them directly. Let them know you see them. You can also contact the 988 Lifeline for guidance on how to support someone in crisis.

If you believe someone is in immediate danger, call 911 and give them as much information as you have.

If Grace said something in a conversation that concerned you, or that you believe put someone at risk, please email us right away at support@1800deargod.com with as much detail as you can. We take these reports seriously and respond to them first.

Grace is here, and Grace stays.
